What is Pneumonia?
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that affects all ages. With pneumonia, the lungs become filled with fluid or pus resulting in inflammation. Often pneumonia is mistaken as the flu, as the symptoms are similar.
Viruses, bacteria, and fungi cause pneumonia; influenza and RSV are the more common causes. It can cause minor or severe illness and can even lead to death. And the best defense against pneumonia is vaccination.
About the Pneumonia Shot
Pneumonia shots are more critical than ever this year. The Center for Disease Control recommends pneumonia shots to reduce your risk of serious illness, including hospitalization.
Also, if you are getting the flu shot or COVID-19 vaccination, you can take them simultaneously.
The two vaccines protect against different types of infection.
- PCV20 protects people from 20 of the most severe types of bacteria that cause pneumonia.
- PPSV23 protects against another 23 types of pneumonia bacteria.
It is important to note that neither shot can prevent every type of pneumonia out there. But they work against more than 30 common types.
And here is the good news. One of each shot should be enough to protect most people for a lifetime. Sometimes, you may need a booster shot as per advice from your doctor.
Common Side Effects of the Pneumonia Shot
Once you have received the Pneumonia shot, patients can experience mild side effects. You cannot get pneumonia from the vaccine. These shots only contain extracts of the bacteria, not the illness-causing bacteria that make people sick.
These are the body’s normal reactions to building your protection against pneumonia. Most of these side effects will subside in a day or two.
- Redness at the injection site
- Muscle pain
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Mild fever
- Loss of appetite
These side effects are rare, in any case. Should you experience any side effects, talk to a Palm Harbor Pharmacist or your doctor about over-the-counter medications for pain and discomfort.
Booking Your Pneumonia Shot Appointment
Palm Harbor Pharmacy makes it easy for patients to book an appointment. It takes up to three weeks for your body to build immunity after getting the shot. Therefore, our pharmacists recommend scheduling your shot early in the fall before flu season begins.
