What is the Flu?
Influenza or the flu is a respiratory illness that affects your body’s airways. It can cause minor irritation or severe illness and can even lead to death. Unlike the common cold, flu symptoms come on suddenly. And it is spread rapidly and easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing, and talking.
The symptoms of the flu may include the following:
- fever or chills
- coughing
- sore throat
- runny or stuffy nose
- muscle or body aches
- headaches
- fatigue
- and further complications
Additionally, sometimes children may experience vomiting and diarrhea. And, you do not have to be running a fever to have the flu, as formerly believed.
Why Get a Flu Shot?
Flu shots are more critical than ever this year. The Center for Disease Control recommends the flu shot to reduce your risk of serious illness, including hospitalization. Those who receive the flu shot avoid potentially exposing others to the virus. In addition, the symptoms don’t usually show up for four days after you come in contact with the virus. Therefore, the infected person has walked around spreading the virus for four days without even knowing it.
The further complications are another reason to get the flu shot. Those complications may be as follows depending on the severity of the case and the individual.
- Asthma attacks
- Pneumonia
- Inflammation of the heart, brain, or muscle tissue
- Multi-organ failure
- And Sepsis
Finally, the influenza virus is ever-changing, making it even more essential to get the shot each year.
Booking Your Flu Shot Appointment
Palm Harbor Pharmacy makes it easy for patients to book an appointment. Because it takes up to two weeks for your body to build immunity after getting the shot, our pharmacists recommend scheduling your shot early in the fall annually.
