What is CBD?
For our purposes, we will focus on learning about the two forms of CBD: Cannabidiol and Tetrahydrocannabinol. Both are derived from the Cannabis plant and are currently serving varying purposes. That said, there are still many states that have not yet legalized the use of CBD products. Palm Harbor Pharmacy suggests you investigate your state’s law regarding the use of CBD oil and products. In Florida, the following is legal:
- Patient Registry or ID Cards
- Dispensaries Allowed
- Use for Specified Conditions
According to Medical News Today,
“Is CBD legal? Hemp-derived CBD products with less than 0.3% THC are legal federally but still illegal under some state laws. Cannabis-derived CBD products, on the other hand, are illegal federally but legal under some state laws. Check local legislation, especially when traveling. Also, keep in mind that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved nonprescription CBD products, which may be inaccurately labeled.”
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the many active compounds in the Cannabis plant. The form used most often in states where Cannabis is not yet legal is the industrial-hemp derived CBD. This is the non-psychoactive form with many of the same medical benefits as the THC products. However, this product does not leave patients with a mind-altering “high” feeling like a THC product. Studies are beginning to show more and more medical benefits and significant changes in the body.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the other form. It is the one most associated with the thoughts, both good and bad, about CBD treatment. It is the form that will get you “high.” CBD products containing THC may prove to be more effective but are not legal everywhere yet. The mind-altering properties are released when the heat is added to the product through smoking or ingesting. Do you have more questions? Contact us today to speak with a Pharmacist.
Where Does CBD Come From?
There seems to be confusion about where CBD comes from and how it is derived. The Cannabis plant is often referred to as hemp or marijuana, depending on the level of THC in each. Of course, hemp is the more regulated and ethically farmed product, where marijuana is sometimes cultivated to increase THC levels.
“The FDA noted that hemp plants are legal under the Farm Bill, as long as they contain less than 0.3% THC.” - MedicalNewsToday
Learn About CBD Relief
As of today, research is ongoing as scientists discover all the medical benefits of CBD, and the results are looking promising. Studies thus far show relief from the following health conditions. CBD may provide relief from:
- Chronic Pain
- Sleep Disorders
- PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder
- Anxiety disorders
- MS- Multiple Sclerosis
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Lung Conditions
One of the more remarkable results of the CBD studies has been the work with children and epilepsy. Additionally, CBD may be useful in treating cancer treatment symptoms. Research is continual on all the above conditions and more. It could be a few more years before we know all the health implications of CBD.
Learn About CBD Forms
CBD is available in several forms, allowing people to utilize the treatment in the way best suited for their condition.
- Oils and Tinctures: This is an oil-based product infused with CBD. The drops go under the tongue for quick absorbency.
- Capsules and Pills: Most often used for digestive and seizure disorders, with a slower effective time.
- Creams and Lotions: When skin treatment is needed, creams and lotions can treat muscle and joint pain, eczema, and psoriasis.
- Edibles: Otherwise known as “gummies,” these are the affordable, discrete way to take CBD. And many people like the way they taste, as well.
- Vaping: Inhalation is the quickest way to receive the benefits of CBD. However, there is still research to be done on whether vaping damages lung tissue.
Dosages in all forms need more research as to maximum usage for efficacy. However, the recommended dosages are on each package. They should be adhered to unless your doctor authorizes you to increase the dosage slowly. In all cases, the CBD product should be started in the lowest dosage and increased as directed, but slowly.
Are There Risks and Side Effects to Note?
Drug interaction, supplement interaction, and FDA approval need to be considered when discovering the risks and side effects of CBD. We should note that anyone taking CBD or any supplement should first speak with their doctor and, second, verify drug interaction with their home pharmacy regarding the application and dosage. As mentioned several times, all the research on CBD is not yet complete. That said, there is a list of possible side effect to note:
- Drug and alcohol interactions
- Liver Damage
- Dosage discrepancy
- Change in alertness
- Gastrointestinal problems
- Mood Changes
- Fertility reduction in males
- Effects on fetal development in pregnant mothers
- Memory delay for teens
And there could be more… or less for that matter. Testing and research will go on to be more inclusive and conclusive.
